Fetal Psychology

I was wondering when our bean would be able to hear our voices. I stumbled across this article and thought it was fascinating! Check it out.

National Parks

So tonight, while doing homework, I was watching a Ken Burns Series called "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" on PBS. I really enjoyed the history... but something kinda bothered me.

Most of our National Park were established by Teddy Roosevelt. At that time the idea of a National Park was a very new idea to our country. There were no laws or rules about how to create them. What bothered me was how Roosevelt would just declare the land as a National Park or National Monument because he was the president.

Now, for the record, I think National Parks and Monuments are a good idea... I just get a little worried when one human man has so much power and can "declare" something because he holds a certain position. I'm not a historian and I was listening in between trying to get the ideal gas law to work for my homework problem so I could be very wrong. But I would get very upset if our current presidents starts declaring things just because the majority of the citizens elected him to the presidency.

Anyway. That's just my opinion.

Two months down Seven to go!

Here we are! We’ve arrived at 2 months already!

Actually, since we only known for 3 weeks, 2 months have gone by quickly. I’m not showing yet and I thought it would be a good time to take a before picture. I’m getting more and more used to the idea of being pregnant so it’s easier now for me to focus on life… and by life I mean school.

The weekend that marks 2 months is a busy one. I’m about to enter the first test of the year. Once you hit the first week of test, school really becomes a marathon until the end. My goal for this weekend is to get a lot of homework done and get ahead in all my classes. In addition, we have a football game and a church picnic to add to our regular weekend task!

Changes I’ve noticed
- Hormones are mean! I have several issues that can be blamed on hormones. I often get woken up in the middle of the night (well… around 4-5am) to use the restroom. This wouldn’t be a problem except I usually can’t go back to sleep. Also, that “pregnancy glow” can be related to hormones. I produce so much oil now and I have to wash my face and hair more… I’m not crazy about it, but I know my body is doing it for the baby. Another favorite, bloating! My rings have become uncomfortable to wear, but I haven’t gained any weight. I was very confused so I asked the midwife at the hospital and she said my favorite word, “Hormones!”
- My body is definitely working for two! I feel tired all the time! I have to be careful about this because lately it has been a good excuse NOT to exercise. However, I read in a book that if you exercise early in pregnancy it helps fight fatigue. I’m convinced this is what was happening the first month. When I started school I was very regular about exercising. I was still tired, but it was easier to manage. I slowed down a bit when we found out I was pregnant only because we had so many appointments and life was thrown off schedule for a bit. I’m back into a schedule and I’m very hopeful about the results… for my body, the baby and my fatigue.

Changes Steven has noticed
-In the two arguments we had recently, I’ve noticed that Fallon will burst into tears very quickly. It reminds me that she is pregnant which makes be feel bad because I know that she has to deal with a lot of extra hormones which probably caused the misunderstanding. But other than that I feel like we have been extra lovey-dovey lately and I’ve really enjoyed it.

Current Size of Baby: ½ inch long and about 1 gram

Upcoming Task for Our Little Bean:
The facial features will form and the little tail will go away. The baby will develop elbows, wrists, knees, shoulders, ankles, hands, fingers, feet, toes and hair follicles. The intestines move out of the umbilical cord and into the abdomen. The placenta begins to circulate blood from mother to baby. Male or Female organs are begin to develop. All vital organs will form and be functioning. The baby begins to swim around (however, I won’t be able to feel it yet). Heart beat is strong enough to hear.

We're going to have a BABY!!!!

So we found out on September 10th that we were pregnant! I’m not quite sure why I got the pregnancy test and did it but… it’s a long story…

I had worked hard all summer to lose weight and help my body conquer the PCOS. And I was doing great! I had two “normal” cycles and my doctors were very proud.

After our trip to Colorado I had no sign of a period and I was thinking we were pregnant…so I did a test… it was invalid (as in the control window never appeared)! So I did another test… still invalid!!! I was very frustrated and wondering why I wasn’t getting the big happy + sign! We went to church and I even started crying when someone asked me how I was doing… not exactly the response you prepare yourself for when you ask someone that. Luckily, she was a friend that knew we were trying and could understand. When we came home I had already assumed it meant we weren’t pregnant. Then I proceed to cry my brains out to Steven for 2-3 hours. He thought his wife had gone completely crazy. We had decided to wait until Wednesday (last possible day for my period) to take the next test.

My anxiety levels were sky high and conversations with Steven about it weren’t helpful. Can you blame the guy?... he probably didn’t know what to do with me. So, I went to my girl time on Tuesday and completely spilled my guts! Thankfully, I have wonderful girl friends and they encouraged me to just trust God. I appreciated hearing it in a different way and seeing the understanding on their faces. After the time, my emotions were in better check and I was listening to the logical side of my brain a little better. After talking to Steven, we decided not to take the test on Wednesday and just to trust God with our desire to get pregnant.

Well, the following Monday came around and I needed to go to the chiropractor to get my back checked for Scoliosis. Well… I was 100% sure he would take an x-ray to check my back. So I had to find out if I was pregnant or not. So I took the test… are you nervous?... I was… it was stinken’ negative!!! It was also very faint… and at this point I was beginning to wonder about the brand I had chosen. I took the faint line as a sure sign we weren’t pregnant, went to my appointment and began to get very bitter.

So, to my knowledge I wasn’t pregnant and I didn’t have a period. I had worked so hard to exercise and eat correctly… I had even lost 20 pounds! WHERE WAS MY PERIOD??? I was trying to understand God’s reasoning and not get angry at him… however, I was expressing much anger and frustration to him!

My internship had ended and I had a lot of extra time. I had originally thought I would do a two-a-day exercise program to further boast my weight lose. But because of my emotional state I talked myself out of it several times. I did do some work in the garden, but I wasn’t burning a ton of calories. At this point I also noticed that my breast were very tender. Instead of thinking, “maybe I’m pregnant” I assumed it was something I had tricked myself into feeling.

School began and I had had some time to cool off. I wanted to begin swimming again and I was very encouraged when a friend from church gave Steven and I some workout plans. I got to work and began swimming 30 minutes 5 times a week. I was feeling much better and God had given me a peace about things. I believed that if I worked hard for another month or so I would see my periods return and we could try again. No matter how wonderful I believed it would be to get pregnant in July, my brain knew I wanted the baby to come on God’s time.

Steven kept on telling me I was pregnant after I did certain things, like cry or complain about my chest. And I was extremely emotional… I even start crying at one of my professors after he corrected me on something minor (I was so embarrassed… but couldn’t keep the tears in). In addition, my lower abdomen was starting to feel tight like after a good workout. I didn’t assume that meant I was pregnant, because I had started working out harder. I thought that swimming was just good for your lower abs.

For some reason, I still don’t know why… maybe it was because it was just there… I decided to take the last pregnancy test in our cabinet. It was, of course, the bad brand and came back invalid! I told Steven I wanted to get a better brand when we went to the groceries store. He told me to go to the doctor first, but I convinced him that this was cheaper and if it came back invalid I would go to the doctor. This all happened on Monday (9/7/09).

The next day (Tuesday) I babysat for a friend. She was a lovely little baby, and despite crying a lot I really enjoyed hanging out with her. At a few points I wondered if God was ever going to give us a baby… but tried to trust and not worry. Then on Wednesday we went to the store.

On Thursday morning I took the test… and to my surprise it had the big happy + sign! I started shaking like crazy. I ran into the bedroom (Steven was just waking up) and yell, “look, look… what does this mean?” He thought I had bugs all over me and was very startled. Thinking back to it… it was kinda funny. Steven promptly yelled back, “I don’t know… what does the paper say?” I said, “I think it means we are pregnant.” Then Steven said, “I told you!”

That day was crazy for me! First off I couldn’t believe we were pregnant! And I wanted to see a doctor ASAP because I was petrified of miscarrying and I had a ton of, “I have no idea what to do, this is my first pregnancy” questions. In addition it was a Thursday so we were going to have to face our home-group and keep it a secret! Pretty close to impossible for me… somehow I made it through.

I went to school and in between classes (which I could hardly pay attention to) I made phone calls. My friends thought I had gone crazy and I think they all knew what was up. I had a horrible time with my OBGYN’s office but called my PCP and got some things done. In addition Steven and I were both coming down with some kind of head cold/allergy type thing and I was so frustrated because every box I pick up said, “if pregnant, ask doctor before use!”

Life still goes on if you have a little secret. It was very strange/hard for me. We went to the Kolache Festival with friends and it was another situation where I wanted to SPILL THE BEANS! One of my girl friend and I broke off from the group to look at quilts and I was about to die! I couldn’t believe I got through it. We also ran into a family from our church and I really, really, really wanted to tell the husband and wife that we were pregnant. And every time I saw a baby I about cried. I was so crazy full of joy! The next day a church was equally difficult… I just wanted to tell everyone. However, everyone was going to have to wait!

Every time Steven and I were alone I would say, “We’re pregnant!” really loudly and we would talk about all the fun things first time parents talk about. Steven had decided that he wanted to build a crib and I wanted to make some of the crib bedding and curtains. I felt connected to Steven and even a little emotional over the fact that we loved each other so much and this baby was going to be able to witness it for its entire life. I was also surprise that Steven worried LESS about finances after we knew we were pregnant. We started designing the baby’s bedding and furniture (that we will hopefully use for all of our kiddos). I even looked at car seats & strollers and added them to my private wish list on Amazon.com.

I wasn’t really feeling pregnant, but trying to worry too much. I still had the symptoms I talked about before but never really felt sick to my stomach unless I ate too much around dinner time. I cut back my dinner portions, took my prenatal vitamins and added milk to all my meals. I was tired and slept a lot over the weekend, but in general I felt great!

Steven took sick leave and we went to first appointment on September 14th. They verified the pregnancy and we asked a lot of questions. It was the first time Steven was openly excited about the baby. Steven smiled really big when Dr. Bacak congratulated us. We also saw someone from our church at the doctor… she even asked why we were there… soooo hard for me. Luckily I had to get some warts removed so I told her that… I wonder if she wondered. Another friend offered to give me ride and insisted that Steven didn’t need to take off work for the appointment (after all, she thought it was just planter’s warts). I really appreciated the offer, but it was getting really, really hard to keep it a secret.

The first ultrasound was done on September 16th and it was a great visit! We found out that our baby was 6 weeks 4 days and that he/she would be born around May 11th, 2010. I immediately thought of two of our friends that had babies on 5-12-09… it was just fun. We also had an awesome moment when the doctor pointed out the tiny heart beat of our 6 week old baby. It’s amazing to me that God gives a heartbeat to something the size of a grain of rice. We won’t be able to hear the heartbeat until our next visit at 10 weeks… but Steven and I both enjoyed seeing it beat away on the ultrasound screen. Our doctor congratulated us and sent us to get flu shots and blood work.

After the visit (and my remaining classes) I rode my bike to Walgreens and made copies of our ultrasound. We were going to tell the family the following weekend (September 19th) and I made cards for each of them. Steven and I wanted everyone to be able to open something all at once. Each card said, “Congratulations! (((open card))) You are going to be a (fill in the blank)!” I placed a copy of the ultrasound picture in each card. They turned out really cute.

The weekend was off to a great start. There was a football game in town and Steven’s parents came into town thinking it would be just another football weekend. We told them as soon as possible because we wanted to have time to celebrate before we left for Dallas. The girls were so excited and Cathy started crying. It was a great moment, and I will never forget it. After we called most of the extended family we got Christine’s anatomy book out and looked at pictures.

After that, we had to calm down because we still had a 4 hour drive with my little sister who had no idea why we were trying to see the entire family all in one day. God had worked out everything perfectly because all of my siblings were able to be in Dallas at once. I really loved the idea of telling everyone in person, but it was a really LONG ride to Dallas.

We all met at my sister’s house on time… except for my mom. I must have called her 15 times. I was getting really nervous and I think my niece (15 yrs) knew something was up. Then my sister mentioned that we would have to eat soon because she was going to have to take her daughter to work. I didn’t want anyone to miss it and I was getting nervous. Then, about 5 seconds later my mom arrived. After she greeted everyone, I pass out cards and there was LOTS of screaming and jumping up and down… and, of course, more hugs. We stayed up late talking about the pregnancy and making plans for 3D ultrasounds, graduation, Christmas… and of course, May 11th.

We were having so much fun telling everyone that we decided to head back to College Station early. We made it to our church and there was even more screaming. It was great… and exhausting! Even without being pregnant, I still would have needed the 3 hour nap I took that afternoon.

I’ve had a lot of emotions pinned up in me for a while now… I just think best out loud. Now that I can talk freely about it in public it brings me so much joy. I feel like I’m doing what I was created to do. I’m so excited to meet our little one!

Please keep our growing family in your prayers!

What a great Man!

I've very proud. I'm proud of Steven!!!!

This semester our church is offering an Old Testament Survey Class. In addition to doing Monday night English Conversation Class, he has also signed up for the Old Testament Class. I'm not involved with these things because of school... I'll have to catch up when I graduate.

Anyway, he went to class and some of the requirements include reading 1-2 chapters of the text book and about 50 chapters of the Old Testament each week. It's a lot of reading... but he is going to do it... he will just have to give up reading the newspapers.

I have to admit, when he told me about it I tried to talk him out of it. But he persisted and started working on the readings.

After thinking about it more it made me smile. This will help Steven in his quest to lead our family spiritually. It's not something he is doing with me or because I thought it was a good idea. It's all on his own. And hopefully our kiddos will have questions about the bible and God's truth... and now Steven can guide us through the Old Testament.

EXCITING!

Something that isn't as exciting is sneezing! Yup folks, fall is here! and I've got the allergies to prove it. Man, I LOVE the Brazos Valley!

Week One Report Card

So one week down 15 to go... the count down to graduation is on! I absolutely can't wait to be done with school and begin working... (Lord, please provide a job)

I didn't get to choose my schedule this semester because I had a few classes that were only offered at one time. My other classes were forced to work around those few problem classes. Nonetheless I'm lined up to GRADUATE! All five years (embarrassing) of my college career I have tried hard not to have classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Classes on these day are 25 minutes longer than on Monday, Wednesday, Friday classes. However, this semester is pay back... I have four classes on Tuesday, Thursday and two on Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

On the other hand, that may be the only bad thing about the semester. It's still the beginning of the semester but it seems I have about two hard classes, one "medium" and three easier classes. When I say easier I mean, "If I attend class I will most likely pass." The two harder ones will require a lot of outside homework... but this is the last time I will have to do homework, so I have lots of incentive.

One of my friend (through church, not school) has reminded me that this is the last time I will be a student. Initially I was like, "Good!" However, thinking about it more it is the last time I will walk/ride my bike as a student on campus. In 15 weeks I will not be able to walk into the civil building or Zachary and "own the place." That feeling is strange... but welcome for sure.

Campus has changed. For one thing a huge renovation is going on at the Memorial Student Center and while it is sad that a generation of students wont experience the MSC.... the renovations is greatly needed. In addition, a lot of my friends have graduated. I still have a couple that are around, either graduating like me or in grad school. Last semester I felt like I knew everyone and everyone knew me... there was no place to go to hide. It's different now. I don't know everyone... and there were plenty of quite, alone times during my first week. Honestly, I like it. I feel like I can be more focused.

Another thing I will enjoy about this semester (and miss after graduation) is my morning routine. I wake up early get ready for the day and ride my bike to the Rec and swim for 30 minutes. Every morning the pool has been so refreshing. For one thing it's just cleaner than our local gym and the pool is 8ft deep instead of 4ft. You can swim in both depths, but I can also do some deep water treading exercises in the 8ft pool. Another friend of mine gave me some workouts that are nicely laminated and very easy to keep at the pool side when I swim. I have really enjoyed having a workout plan and feel liked in just one week I have improve my technique so much... at graduation I will be swimming like a pro! That excites me.

In addition to swimming, I love biking to campus! It initially came about as a way to get to campus faster than the bus. It saves me about 15 minutes one way (30 minutes a day). Also, if I ride my bike hard on the way to the rec I turn my 30 minute swim into an hour long workout. Then on the way home, depending on the route, I can relax or get another half hour workout in... which is good because I sit in class all day. It will be interested to see how much weight I lose. This summer, just working out 30 minutes and being outside in the heat I lost about 20 pounds (over about 4 months). I have approximately the same time until graduation. No matter how much I lose, I know I will feel good at the end... because exercise is amazing!

This semester is very manageable. I will start job hunting soon and will move into a very different time of my life. It's time and I'm excited!!!
